EFCC prosecutes fake Assistant Commissioner of Police
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned one Kunle Adeshola before Justice Hussain Baba of the FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja, for allegedly parading himself as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
Adeshola was arraigned on seven counts of impersonation, forgery and obtaining under false pretences.
A statement by the EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said Adeshola had allegedly presented himself to the Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation, claiming he had been assigned to discreetly investigate employees of the corporation.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecuting counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, asked the court for a trial date and urged the court to remand the accused person in prison.
The defence counsel, Yemi Akinseye, however, prayed the court to admit the accused person to bail, stressing that the charges preferred against him were bailable. Akinseye assured the court that the accused would be available to face trial.
One of the charges reads, 'That you, Kunle Adeshola, 'M', sometimes between May and October, 2013 in Abuja, in the Abuja Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, falsely pretended to hold the office of an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission with staff identity card no. EFCC: 073, as a public servant and in such assumed character, held out yourself to the Director-General and staff of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation under the colour of such office and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 132 of the Penal Code Cap. 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990.'
Baba granted the accused bail in the sum of N2m and a surety in like sum, who must be a civil servant of the rank of deputy director in the federal civil service and resident in Abuja.
Adeshola is also to be remanded in custody until he has perfected the bail terms. The case was adjourned till November 29, for hearing. - Punch.
