Plateau Assembly Speaker resigns

By The Citizen

The Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, John Dabwan, on Wednesday resigned as the speaker of the House.

He was immediately replaced with Mr. Titus Alams, the member representing Bokkos State Constituency.

The lawmakers, by a 16-member vote, also impeached the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Johnbull Shekarau, and replaced him with Mrs. Joyce Ramnap.

According to a reliable source, Dabwan's resignation is believed to be the aftermath of his falling out of favour with Governor Jonah Jang and some stalwarts of the ruling People's Democratic Party in the state.

Reading his resignation letter on the floor of the House on Wednesday, the ex-speaker said he had to resign because he did not want to cause another round of crisis in the state.

He said, 'It is painful that I have to resign. Plateau has witnessed a lot of crises and peace has returned to the state and so I will not want to cause another round of crisis in the state.'
