Unknown gunmen on Friday kidnapped the Dean of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, and his wife, Beatrice.

Kattey was said to be driving back to Port Harcourt with his wife Beatrice when they were abducted and whisked away by unknown gunmen at the Aleto Bridge, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State at about 10.30pm on Friday night.

The abducted cleric is the Archbishop of Niger Delta Province and Bishop of Niger Delta North Diocese as well as the second in command to the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh.

Described in the church circles as 'a simple and exemplary religious leader', Kattey was said to move around without security details. A plea for his unconditional release was unanimous among the church's faithful.

Reports indicate that the gunmen later abandoned Kattey's Wife Beatrice and their get-away car   following a chase by the police.
