Gun Shots In Rivers Govt. House As Another Fighting Averted At The Assembly

Sporadic gun shots were heard around the Rivers State Government House as another round of fracas among members of the Rivers state House of Assembly was averted Wednesday as Police stopped attempt by the two factions of the House to resume sitting.

It was not immediately clear as at the time of filing this report if the gun shots were from the Police or thugs. But an eye witness told Pointblanknews.com that tear gas canisters were seen around the vicinity of the Government House just as he said gun shots were heard.

Meanwhile, the five anti governor Chibuike Amaechi faction had allegedly slated their sitting for 8am while the pro Amaechi group had also fixed
theirs for 10am.    As early as 7am thousands of youths had started milling around the Assembly complex, a situation the Police said forced it to move in to stop the sitting.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr Joseph Mbu Joseph  said he got a letter from the  Assembly on Tuesday that the House would reconvene  Wednesday, adding that his men had to stop the sitting to avoid a breach of  peace in the state.

Continuing, the Police boss who spoke through the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe said the Police did not seal off the Assembly complex as alleged in some quarters.

''There was a letter to us that the House will seat this morning. There was a crowd of people and this could pose a breach of peace. We had to disperse them. And they have been dispersed '.

The Police barricaded the two ends of Moscow road leading to the Assembly complex with patrol vehicles and armoured personnel carrier. Motorists and pedestrians were not allowed into the road.  Some of the youths who had gathered on the road before Police moved in were asked to raise their hands up and were risked by anti riot policemen before being turned back.
