SAN FRANCISCO, July 07, (THEWILL) - The Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has joined the nationwide strike of ASUU over Federal Government’s refusal to honour an agreement it signed with university lecturers four years ago.

“The strike has become necessary due to the failure of the federal/state government to implement the 1999 ASUU/FGN agreement in spite of assurance, promises and even a Memorandum of Understanding reached with by the Federal Government since January 2012, "chairman of the ASUU chapter of DELSU, Dr. Emmanuel Nwafor Mordi, said in a statement.

"The agreement was due for review in 2012, yet as we journey into second half of 2013, there is no machinery in place for the review of the agreement. Instead, the Federal Government is determined to unilateral rewrite the agreement and abandoned its commitment to improve the university system," the statement said.

The DELSU chapter also requested that the Vice-Chancellor of DELSU should address other issues raised earlier to avoid a situation where the strike in DELSU would continue after the ASUU nationwide strike.
