SAN FRANCISCO, January 02, (THEWILL) -The Senator, representing Kogi Central Senatorial district and the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman has called on the people of Kogi State and Nigerians to eschew violence in the interest of peace and unity of the country.

Maintaining that the incessant and senseless killings of innocent Nigerians as a way of expressing grievances would not take the people anywhere, the Senator said dialogue must be explored as the best option for resolving grievances.

The Senator who gave the advice in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity , Mr. Michael Jegede, to congratulate Nigerians on the celebration of the New Year 2013, also noted that it was only with the total entrenchment of peace, love and unity amongst the people that the country can achieve the desired growth and development.

While calling on government to take proactive steps in tackling the general insecurity in the country, Abatemi-Usman made a passionate appeal to those involved in the wanton killing of innocent citizens to have a rethink and embrace dialogue.

This, according to him, is the best approach in conflict resolution.

He also stressed the need for Nigerians to be prayerful more than ever before.

“I congratulate Nigerians for the opportunity given to us by God Almighty to witness the year 2013. As we commence the New Year, we need to carry on, in all facets of our lives, the basic lesson of God’s consciousness through mutual and neighbourliness, love, selflessness and righteousness which are, indeed, the virtues for nation building.

“We must endeavour to always be our brother's keeper. It is only through sincere love and affection for one another that we can continue to live in harmony and unity, and open the door for steady growth and development,” he said.
