NAIROBI, Kenya, November 9, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Resident Representative of UNDP, Mr Aeneas Chuma, attended a meeting with the National Steering Committee of the Global Environment Facility at Treetops hotel in Nyeri, thanking outgoing board members for their exemplary dedicated service.

The Small Grants Programme of the GEF, governed by the National Steering Committee, has become a flagship programme in Africa and the world when it comes to community-based environmental conservation projects, benefitting both local people and the global environment.

“UNDP is proud to be associated with the highly successful Small Grants Programme of the GEF.

The SGP vision of “local action, global impact” is one we very much share”, said Mr. Chuma

He also added that “Since its inception in 1992, the GEF SGP has remained one of the most successful programmes of the Global Environment Facility. It has gained the reputation of being a fast and effective modality for channeling funds to poor, local and marginalized communities.”

Among the successful projects of the SGP are: beekeeping coupled with conservation in the Mt Kenya region, marine conservation and costal resource management in Vanga, an eco-resource center and community forest association, also in Mt Kenya.
