POLICE ARREST EX-ABIA DEPUTY GOV OVER GUNRUNNING

The police authorities on Tuesday in Abuja arrested former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Comrade Chris Akomas on allegations of kidnapping and gunrunning, in violation of a subsisting court order restraining the police from arresting him.

His arrest was sequel to a petition personally written and signed by his former boss, Governor Theodore Orji, alleging his involvement in the spate of kidnappings in the state and gunrunning activities.

But his lawyer, Prince Orji Nwafor -Orizu described his arrest and subsequent detention by the police, as barbaric as it was done in clear violation of a subsisting order of a Federal High court, Umahia division which barred the police from arresting him.

Besides, he said Akomas' arrest and detention under trumped up charges was against the assurances by the Inspector General of the Police that he would not be arrested in view of the subsisting court order.

Prince Nwafor-Orizu who described the actions of the police as politically motivated explained that the police in Abia have subjected his client to series of arrest under spurious allegations.

Besides, the lawyer said his arrest was an attempt to disqualify him from contesting the governorship position of the state in next year's election against the incumbent governor.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Force Public relation Officer, Yemi Ajai denied knowledge of the arrest when contacted on phone.

But Nwafor-Orizu  who was at the police station with Akomas told Daily Sun that before his arrest, his client  had held several press conferences  narrating  his ordeal in the hands of the police and the relentless efforts of the state government to rope him in on kidnapping and gunrunning charges to truncate his gubernatorial ambition.

Before his resignation as deputy Governor, the Abia State House of Assembly had commenced the process of his impeachment from office.
