Mr P's Dismissal Of Igbo Language Is Insulting – Daniel Regha

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Popular critic and celebrity tormentor Daniel Regha has weighed in on the debate sparked by singer Mr P's comments about Nigerian indigenous languages.

Recall that the singer had questioned the value of Nigerian languages after boasting about his children's fluency in French during a vacation in Paris.

Reacting to his remarks, Regha, via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stated that Igbo is just as important as French and that Mr P, of all people, should know that. He noted that while it is not entirely bad if his children are yet to learn the language, dismissing Igbo and other Nigerian languages is insulting. He emphasized that speaking a language is a means of identity and cultural preservation, and has even helped people in dire situations.

According to the critic, speaking a foreign language gives an advantage, but ridiculing one's own mother tongue in the process is absurd.

He wrote:
"Igbo language is just as important as French, Mr. P of all people should know that. Now, while it's not entirely bad if his children are yet to learn the language, dismissing Igbo and other Nigerian languages is rather insulting. Asides from it being a means of identity and preserving culture, just speaking a language has helped people in dire situations.

It's a good thing if anyone can speak and understand a foreign language perfectly, it gives them an advantage, however, ridiculous yours in the process is absurd."
