Davido Defends World Cup Protest Outfit, Says Citizens' Safety Matters More Than Image
Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has opened up about his decision to use his FIFA World Cup performance as a platform to highlight Nigeria's escalating kidnapping crisis.
The singer explained that he wore a custom outfit displaying the names of abducted schoolchildren and their teachers from Oyo State to ensure the world did not look away from the tragedy.
In a recent interview, Davido questioned the silence surrounding the situation, arguing that protecting the country's reputation should never come at the expense of innocent lives. He stated that there is no image worth preserving if children are being taken from their schools.
The singer also emphasized that while performing on a global stage was a privilege, he saw it as an opportunity to speak for the voiceless.
Davido further stressed that artists and public figures must not shy away from speaking out on humanitarian and security issues.
He said:
"A lot of people do not want to talk about what is happening in my country because they want to protect a lot of images. Which image is there to protect if little children are being kidnapped?."
