Tarmuwa Local Government Council in Yobe State has engaged 45 National Youth Service Corps members and National Certificate of Education graduates in the teaching of extra lessons in schools.

Its Chairman, Alhaji Ismaila Mai-Adamu, disclosed this in Damaturu on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said, 'As an educationally-backward local government, we have to adopt extra measures to catch up both at the primary and secondary school levels.'

He explained that the NYSC members and NCE graduates were engaged to teach subjects in which the pupils were not performing well.

He added that the council had provided free instructional materials to teach the pupils, 'and that has encouraged enrolment and makes the children want to come to school.''

Mai-Adamu said that N11.7m was spent on the renovation of some classrooms 'because we want to make the environ-ment attractive for teaching and learning.

'I personally embarked on sensitisation programme on education to boost enrolment into schools.

'I tell parents that if they want their children to become successful, they must allow them to go to school; and this is working, with more children being enrolled into schools,' he said.
