BEVERLY HILLS, May 14, (THEWILL) – The military Thursday imposed a 24-hour curfew in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, hours after troops successfully repelled Boko Haram fighters who attempted to overrun the city on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters had attempted to enter Maiduguri in the night via Jere Local Government Area but were repelled by federal troops who engaged the rampaging terrorists in a gun battle that lasted over an hour. The assault forced the terrorists to retreat.

Casualty figures were unknown as at the time of writing this report.

“The military is on red alert following the incident,” one senior soldier told THEWILL in Maiduguri.

In a statement on Thursday, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations in charge of 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Tukur Gusau said: “In view of the recent development within Maiduguri metropolis a 24 hour curfew is hereby imposed in the city. This is done to protect lives and property of innocent and law abiding people of Maiduguri.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to once again thank you for your continuous support and cooperation. The situation is firmly under control.”
