Lagos Guber Poll: Group Threatens To Sue Oba Of Lagos For Threats To Igbos

The Igbo Action Movement (IAM) has threatened to sue the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu to Court for threatening to kill the Igbos in Lagos if they voted against the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwumi Ambode in next Saturday's governorship election. This was contained in a statement signed by the President of the Group, Col. Uche Ukaegbu (Retd).

While Addressing Igbo leaders in Lagos, Oba Akiolu had threatened to make life unbearable for the Igbos in Lagos if they ever tried to vote against Mr. Ambode whom he said, he had chosen as the next governor of Lagos. The Movement berated Oba Akiolu for throwing caution to the wind in his speech which according to the Group was capable of re-opening healed wounds and endangering Igbo-Yoruba relations.

According to the Group, “if the Oba of Lagos wants the Igbos to vote for the APC candidate, he should persuade them to do that and not to threaten their lives and properties in Lagos State.” The Movement reminded the Oba of Lagos that the Igbos had contributed immensely to the development of Lagos and would never succumb to the threat of a radical traditional ruler who shows no regard to life, civility and age-long relationship.”

The Movement further stated that Oba Akiolu's threat to kill the Igbos and throw them into the Lagoon would never go unchallenged. “The present and future generations of Ndigbo will never forget this threat,” the Group said.

The Movement appealed to the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, Chief T.A. Orji, Ohanaeze, Politicians and businessmen from the South-East to quickly convene a meeting and fashion out a response. It said that Oba Akiolu should be dragged to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for making a hate speech against the Igbos. The Movement warned that the Oba of Lagos would be held responsible if any Igbo suffers harm, death or destruction of property in Lagos State.

The Group advised the Igbos in Lagos to vote against the APC Candidate if they so choose. It said that Ambode would certainly lose the support of many Igbos for the reckless speech credited to the Oba of Lagos. “Heavens will not fall if Ambode loses the election. The Igbos will defend themselves even in the palace of the Oba of Lagos if attacked.”
