Security: Uduaghan Inaugurates Task Force To Check Cattle Rearers

SAN FRANCISCO, April 23, (THEWILL) â€' Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has set up a high powered Task Force headed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba to check the influx, indiscriminate movement and activities of cattle and the herdsmen across the state.

Inaugurating the task force in Asaba on Wednesday, Governor Uduaghan observed that activities of cattle and cattle rearers have posed a new security challenge in the state.

According to him, 'We are having challenges with cattle rearers to the extent that our farmers cannot go to their farms,' adding, 'of recent, we have had influx of cattle and cattle rearers to the state. Sometimes, they carry assault rifles, engage in armed robberies and other dangerous activities that are not supposed to happen in a civilized society.'

He said that the task force also has as members, representatives of the Army, State Security Service, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Immigration, Traditional Rulers, Members of the State House of Assembly, Commissioners of Environment, Justice and Local Government Affairs, Council Chairmen, Traditional Rulers, Farmers Council, Northern Communities in the state while the office of the Secretary of the State Government will run the secretariat of the task force.

Governor Uduaghan disclosed that the task force will monitor the herdsmen and also; identify their origin; arrest anyone in possession of fire arms and other dangerous weapons; control the influx of illegal immigrants to the state and hand over identified illegal immigrants to the Comptroller of Immigration in the state; check activities of people who occupy uncompleted buildings; and ensure that periodic report of the activities of the task force is sent to the state security council meeting.

While congratulating members of the task force, Governor Uduaghan stated that their job should be handled with all sense of patriotism and dedication.

Responding on behalf of members of the task force, its chairman, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba assured Governor Uduaghan and all Deltans of their safety, noting that the task force will not fail in its responsibility of making the state unsafe for people with sinister intentions.
