Dismissed NIMC Workers disrupt NAS activities

By The Citizen

Disengaged staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) yesterday stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja to protest their illegitimate disengagement by the current leadership of the commission.

The enraged workers, who blocked the three gates leading to the National Assemblycomplex as they began their protest in the early hours of yesterday, were annoyed that the National Assembly could not  intervene  as  the NIMC sacked 4,029 of its workers with a plan to engage 18,900 fresh workers without following due process.

The petition, which indicted the leadership of NIMC and was submitted to Chairman Senate Committee on Population and National Identity Card, Senator Maina Ma’aji Lawan,  was also allegedly covered up.

It would be recalled that the NIMC Director General, Mr. Chris Onyemenam, had appeared before National Assembly late last year to foreclose the  possibility of recalling the sacked staff, whom he described as unemployable. NIMC, it was gathered, had followed this up with the flagging off of a mass recruitment exercise to replace the sacked workers.

But the sacked workershave also vowed to disrupt the recruitment exercise which commenced this week at regional levels.
