THE International Press Centre (IPC) has called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to consider the various calls and agitation within and outside the country for convocation of a sovereign national conference.

The group said the only way out of the cycle of crisis in the country is to allow the federating units in Nigeria look at how best they want to co-exist. Speaking at an interactive press session in Lagos yesterday, IPC Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, said there was need for government to use such a conference to tackle the cycle of violence currently bedevilling the nation.

'A sovereign national conference will look at the social welfare system in the country and seek the best ways to make it work.' he said.

He noted that ethnicity or religion might not necessarily be the cause of the violence that had erupted periodically in various parts of the country, saying 'the circumstances that gave birth to the Boko Haram sect and other ethnic militia that may have risen at one time or the other in the nation's history can no longer be ignored.'

According to Arogundade, 'the army of young people in Nigeria that are idle poses a grave danger to the continued existence of the nation.'

He urged the media to play a great role in ensuring security of lives and property in the country.
