Nasarawa: The Untold Achievements of Senator Adokwe

By Ibrahim Kabiru Dallah

For the past few weeks, I have watched with keen interest and critical observation on Social Media the many lies of some young Men and Women that were hired to blackmail the personality of Senator Suleiman Asonya Adokwe, Nasarawa South (Senatorial District). Many of them have insulted him or hated on him based on his achievement at the 6th and 7th Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but inquisitively, nobody among them has yet to produce any testimony as to any act of corruption against him, neither has he been indicted nor charged to court in any act bordering on corruption throughout his life in service to humanity. This piece is to educate the unsuspecting general public about the Senator Suleiman Asonya Adokwe that I know. With the political situation in Nasarawa State, whether you love him or hate him. There is never a focal point position with him. With Adokwe, what you see is what you will surely get.

Senator Suleiman Asonya Adokwe, a companionable son of Agwatashi, the cradle of Alago Nation, needs no much introduction to those that are politically inclined in Nasarawa State. However, for purpose of clarity and those outside Nasarawa State, I consider it necessary and imperative to further introduce Senator Adokwe to the general public.

Suleiman was born in Agwatashi, Nasarawa State, on 15 February, 1954 into a family of Adokwe of Agwatashi, the cradle of the Alago Nation.

Educationally, Senator Suleiman had his primary education in Agwatashi from 1962 to 1967 and his Secondary education at the famous Federal Government College Kano from 1968 - 1974. He later attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and graduated in 1978 with Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, he earned Master's Degree in Labour Studies from the University of Sussex, England in 1983 and he is a Barrister at Law. He worked for the Plateau State (Now Nasarawa State) Civil Service from 1979 to 199, rising to the rank of Permanent Secretary and was Nasarawa State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs from 2003-2006 under Abdullahi Adamu led Government, after taking his seat in senate in May 2007, he was appointed to Committees on Senate Services, Security and Intelligence, Navy, National Planning, Downstream Petroleum and Capital Markets. Adokwe as is fondly called by the good people of Nasarawa State ran for re-election as Senator for Nasarawa South on the PDP platform in the April, 2011 elections. He was elected, winning 108,844 votes against 103,320 votes for Tanko Wambai of the Defunct Congress of Progressive Change (CPC), presently he is the Chairman, Senate Service and Culture and Tourism.

As I write, the information and fact available before me, has clearly shown that Senator Adokwe has improved the living condition of the people of Nasarawa South Senatorial District through direct investment in critical sectors of education, economic, health and youths empowerment.

In his quest for the transformation of the Educational Sector in Nasarawa State and to empower the younger generation, Adokwe has constructed and renovated blocks of classrooms in over 30 villages in Nasarawa South Senatorial District, and for the avoidance of doubt here are the list of the Schools; Government Secondary School Agwatashi,Government Secondary School Gidinye, Government Secondary School Kekura, Government Secondary School Duduguru, Government School School Kyakale, , Efurigbo Primary School Agwatashi. Government Secondary School Bukan Sidi, Government Secondary School Kwara, Mahanga Primary School, Giza Central Primary School, Government Secondary School Wuse, Government Secondary School Jangwa, Abagu Primary School, Government Education Area Awonge, Andoma Primary School Doma, Isyaka Islamic Primary School, Lafia, Local Government Education Area Primary School Ugwan Doka, Local Government Education Area Primary School Gidinye, Local Government Education Area Primary School Ankani, Government Secondary School Adogi, Government Secondary School Kyakale, Local Government Education Area Primary School Agwade, Government Secondary School Aridi Ajege, Local Government Education Area Primary School Kwandere and many more that space will not allowed me to mention.

As a learned person, He also constructed examination halls at Government Secondary School Wuse and Government Secondary School Jangwa in Awe Local Government Area, Science Laboratory at Okpatta, Library and Information Communication and Technology Centre at Keana Local Government.

It is not longer news that Senator Adokwe liberally donated thousands of exercise books at level of primary schools and helped to offset SSCE and JAMB registration fees annually in his constituency, annual scholarship scheme to support those in the higher Institution, annual football competition to reduce the rates of youths restiveness and free computer training programme for the less privilege people, in fact, if I will have my way, I would have asked him to contest for 'Governor of Nasarawa State Come 2015' so the youths will see more and more of Youths empowerment.

Also, in his bid to make people feel the dividend of democracy in Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Senator Adokwe has provided portable and safe drinking water to World Health Organization (WHO) Standard needs, sank over 25 boreholes in remote villages of our constituency; Azara in Awe Local Government, Primary Health Care (PHC) Obi, Gidan Buba, Kadarko, Murya Agyaragu, Akpanaja, Gidan Osa, Ankani, Gwadenye, etc.

For Commercial purpose, he built a bridge that connects Burum-Burum and Rutu-Alagye to transports their farm products to the neighbouring markets.

As someone who has grown up in the farming area and whom also have human feelings for the farmer, he has distributed thousands of bags of fertilizer every rainy season to peasant farmers.

Over 150 youths in Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Senator Adokwe has placed them on monthly salaries.

It is based on the aforementioned that I am compelled as a loyal son of Agwatashi to remind the good people of Nasarawa South Senatorial District both within and outside the State that Senator Suleiman Asonya Adokwe has done well and he should as a matter of dividend of democracy be given the opportunity to serve us more beyond 2015 in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
