SAN FRANCISCO, May 15, (THEWILL) â€' Nigeria's military hierarchy has withdrawn the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the newly-established 7 Division of the Nigeria Army, Maiduguri, Borno State, Maj. Gen. Ahmadu Mohammed, after angry soldiers fired shots at his armoured vehicle yesterday in protest following the killing of about 10 soldiers in an ambush by Boko Haram gunmen.

The removal of General Mohammed was announced Thursday by the Defence Headquarters.

The GOC had visited the Maimalari Barrack in the Borno State capital, where some of the soldiers allegedly killed were mobilised from to calm fray nerves when he was welcomed with sporadic shootings by soldiers who blamed him for the death of their

colleagues.
Local sources told THEWILL that the slain soldiers were part of an elite team on a counter-insurgency operation.

They had allegedly planned to spend the night at a village on Tuesday but were allegedly ordered by the GOC to proceed to Maiduguri in the night but were ambushed en route by Boko Haram terrorists.

Brigadier General MY Ibrahim has been appointed as new GOC of the division.
