NUJ Official, Wife, Daughter Killed in Ondo Deputy Governor's Convoy Accident

Four persons were Saturday killed at Aponmu Village on Akure-Ondo Road when a vehicle rammed into the convoy of the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Al Olanusi, around 10.20 am. However, the deputy governor, who was going to Ondo town for an official assignment, escaped death by the whiskers.

Those who died in the accident were the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), NTA Chapel, Mr. Alex Akinwale, his wife, Rebecca, his daughter, Paulina, and their house-help. However, his son, Paul, survived the incident and was admitted to the Accident and Trauma Centre, Ondo Town. A traditional ruler, the Osunmakinde of Ife Tuntun, Oba Obawure Taofeek Olaposi, sustained injuries in the accident and has been hospitalised.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred when a white Toyota Camry car belonging to the monarch ran into the Deputy Governor's convoy among other vehicles in the process of overtaking them on the road.

It was gathered that the driver of the Camry was dangerously overtaking some vehicles and in the process rammed into oncoming vehicles including the deputy governor's convoy resulting in a multiple accident.

The deceased were said to be occupants of a vehicle belonging to Akinwale, which the Camry rammed into before hitting the Deputy Governor's convoy. The monarch and a teenager among the occupants of his vehicle are said to be responding to treatment at a Specialist hospital in Akure, while the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
