Reps offer supplementary budget to end ASUU strike

By The Citizen

Dismayed by the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the unending showdown between the university dons and the federal government, the House of Representatives said on Thursday that it would approve a supplementary budget if such move would end the educational crisis.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, said this after the House was briefed on efforts by its Committee on Education to end the strike.

The speaker appealed to the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to quickly reach an understanding and suspend the strike, observing that the country would pay dearly for the lost academic time in the future if the strike was allowed to continue.

Tambuwal added, 'Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to please quickly resolve the problem.

'And if there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.'
