HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT: LAMORDE STOP MAKING NOISE: EFCC CANNOT FIGHT CORRUPTION

By COMRADE KINDNESS INNOCENT JONAH

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently told the Nation before Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes on Thursday 22, 2012 that Lawyers and Judges were frustrating the efforts of the Commission to prosecute and jail big “shots” who steal public money.

There are two sides to the coin: Yes or No. The Yes case is that Nigerian Judicial System is very corrupt, infact, the most corrupt in the world, no doubt. If that is not the case, let somebody say why people like Otedola, Orji Uzo Kalu, Theordore Orji, Boni Haruna, Joshua Daniye, Tinubu and former Governor of Jigawa State to mention but a few, have not been convicted of corruption despite prosecution by EFCC?

The NO case exposes the double standard of EFCC in fighting corruption genuinely. The whingeing about by EFCC is a wolf-crying that has remained in the cradle since 2003 establishment. What did EFCC do in Farouk-Otedola saga? What did EFCC do in Obasanjo and Liyel Imoke that embezzled 20 billion US Dollars? What did EFCC do in Elumelu and Banana Peel saga? What did EFCC do in Hermin Ahembe and Oteh saga?

The truth is that people like Alozia Ogugbuaja need to handle EFCC. To make EFCC workable, the law establishing it should be amended to make room for arrest, prosecution and trial in a Special Tribunal. Lamorde should not give excuses, but Ribadu performed more highly creditably even with these thorny laws.
