NSC Increases Team Nigeria Bonuses at 2026 Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced an increase in financial rewards for Team Nigeria athletes competing at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in a move aimed at boosting morale and encouraging medal-winning performances.

Under the revised incentive package, athletes who win gold medals will now receive a total reward of $10,000.

The amount includes an instant cash payment of $5,000, while the remaining $5,000 will be transferred directly to the athlete's account.

Silver medallists will earn $5,000 in total, made up of a $2,000 immediate reward and a $3,000 bank payment. Bronze winners will receive $3,000, with $1,000 paid instantly and $2,000 deposited afterward.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko explained that the decision followed consultations with the commission's leadership and was designed to further motivate Team Nigeria throughout the competition.

The revised package represents an improvement on the commission's previous reward structure, particularly for gold medallists.

According to the commission, athletes who secured gold medals during the opening days of the Games have already received the upgraded rewards.

Coaches are also included in the incentive programme, with each coach set to receive $5,000 whenever one of their athletes wins a gold medal.

Beyond performance bonuses, the NSC disclosed that athletes and coaches are receiving daily allowances to support them during the Games.

The commission also retained the option of offering additional cash rewards in exceptional situations to inspire athletes chasing medals.

The enhanced welfare package reflects the NSC's commitment to rewarding excellence and ensuring Team Nigeria remains motivated as the country seeks more podium finishes in Glasgow.
