CAF Doubles WAFCON Winners' Prize to $2 Million
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the tournament winners set to receive a record-breaking $2 million.
The new reward doubles the amount awarded to the champions at the previous edition, highlighting CAF's continued efforts to boost women's football across the continent.
Nigeria's Super Falcons, who are the defending champions, will be aiming to retain their crown and claim the enhanced financial reward.
Beyond the winners' prize, CAF has also increased the tournament's overall prize pool to $5.8 million, representing a substantial rise from previous editions.
The governing body said the improved financial package is part of its long-term strategy to strengthen the women's game and provide greater support for participating nations.
The runners-up will also benefit from the revised structure, receiving a larger cash prize than before, while the third-placed team will earn an increased reward.
In addition, every nation competing in the tournament will receive higher participation funding, ensuring that all 16 teams enjoy improved financial support regardless of their final position.
CAF noted that investment in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations has grown significantly in recent years.
The organisation believes the increased prize money will encourage greater competitiveness, attract more attention to the tournament and contribute to the continued development of women's football throughout Africa.
The competition has also expanded in size, with 16 countries now taking part instead of the previous 12. The larger format is expected to provide more opportunities for emerging football nations while raising the overall standard of the tournament.
Morocco will host the 2026 edition of WAFCON, with matches scheduled to take place from late July through mid-August.
Fans across the continent are expected to witness another exciting tournament featuring Africa's best women's national teams.
For Nigeria's Super Falcons, the championship presents an opportunity not only to defend their continental title but also to secure the biggest prize ever offered in the history of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
