The veteran shot-stopper confirmed his decision after competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, closing the curtain on one of the most remarkable careers in Mexican football history.
The 41-year-old shared an emotional message on social media, expressing gratitude to fans, teammates, coaches, and every club he represented throughout his journey.
Ochoa reflected on the unique demands of being a goalkeeper, describing the role as one that requires patience, courage, and the ability to deliver in crucial moments.
Ochoa leaves the game as one of Mexico's most decorated footballers. He featured in six FIFA World Cups, a milestone achieved by only a select group of players in world football.
He was Mexico's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2014, 2018, and 2022 tournaments, producing several unforgettable performances that earned global recognition.
His professional career began with Club América in 2004 before he made history by becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to play in Europe following his move to French side Ajaccio.
He later represented clubs including Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, Salernitana, AVS Futebol, and AEL Limassol, while also enjoying a successful return to Club América.
On the international stage, Ochoa helped Mexico secure multiple CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and was part of the squad that claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He also lifted domestic silverware with Club América and added the Belgian Cup to his list of achievements during his spell at Standard Liège.
Although he played a reduced role at the 2026 World Cup, Ochoa's farewell was filled with emotion as he bid goodbye to the sport that defined his life.
His retirement marks the end of an era for Mexican football, with fans remembering him as one of the country's finest goalkeepers and a player whose commitment, consistency, and leadership inspired generations.
