Uruguay Appoint Diego Forlán as Interim Head Coach After World Cup Disappointment
Uruguay have turned to one of their greatest football icons, Diego Forlán, to lead the national team following the resignation of Marcelo Bielsa after the country's disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Uruguayan Football Association confirmed that the former striker will serve as interim head coach as the team begins preparations for its next international assignments.
His appointment comes after Uruguay failed to progress beyond the group stage, finishing third in their group with just two points.
The early World Cup exit fell far below expectations and ultimately brought an end to Bielsa's time in charge. The federation has now placed its trust in Forlán, hoping his experience and understanding of Uruguayan football will help restore confidence within the squad.
The 47-year-old has signed a short-term contract that will run until March 2027, after which the football association will evaluate his performance before deciding whether to retain him permanently.
In addition to overseeing the senior national team, Forlán will continue working with Uruguay's Under-20 side as they prepare for the 2027 South American U-20 Championship.
Forlán remains one of the most celebrated figures in Uruguay's football history. He was instrumental in the country's impressive run to the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he scored five goals and was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.
During his playing career, the former forward represented top clubs including Manchester United, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid and Internacional, earning widespread recognition for his goalscoring ability and leadership.
Uruguay will now hope that the former international can successfully transition his achievements on the pitch into the dugout as he begins the task of rebuilding the national team and guiding them toward a stronger future on the international stage.
