Hugo Oliveira Emerges as Leading Candidate for Strasbourg Coaching Role

Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of French club Strasbourg as the search for Gary O'Neil's replacement nears its conclusion.

The 47-year-old has emerged as one of the strongest contenders after several other managerial options were considered by the Ligue 1 side.

Strasbourg had been linked with multiple candidates during their search for a new manager. While Norwegian coach Kjetil Knutsen was initially mentioned among the possibilities, reports suggest he is no longer in contention.

Wilfried Nancy also remains under consideration, but Oliveira has reportedly moved ahead in the race.

Currently in charge of Portuguese side Famalicão, Oliveira is under contract until 2028. Any move for the coach would reportedly require Strasbourg to activate a release clause believed to be worth around €4 million.

Oliveira has built a strong coaching reputation over the years, particularly through his experience working alongside Marco Silva.

He served as Silva's assistant at several clubs, including Hull City, Watford, Everton, and Fulham, gaining valuable experience in both the Premier League and English football.

His work at Famalicão has further strengthened his credentials. Under his leadership, the Portuguese club enjoyed an impressive campaign, finishing fifth in the Primeira Liga and earning praise for its consistent performances throughout the season.

If appointed, Oliveira would take charge of a Strasbourg side looking to continue its development in Ligue 1.

The French club is expected to make a final decision soon, with an official announcement potentially arriving in the coming days if negotiations are successfully completed.

The appointment would represent Oliveira's first opportunity to manage a club in one of Europe's top five leagues, marking a significant step forward in his coaching career.
