Japan Donates Badminton Equipment To Boost Nigeria's Grassroots Development

Nigeria's badminton development has received a significant boost after the Badminton Association of Japan donated sporting equipment to support player development across the country.

The initiative is expected to strengthen grassroots programmes while providing additional resources for elite athletes preparing for major competitions.

The presentation ceremony, held in Abuja, brought together officials from both countries, including representatives of the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Olympic Committee, and the Japanese Embassy.

The donation reflects the growing sporting relationship between Nigeria and Japan and forms part of efforts to encourage youth participation through international collaboration.

The equipment package includes dozens of badminton rackets, shuttlecocks, racket covers and bags, all of which will be distributed to aid training programmes nationwide.

Japanese Ambassador Suzuki Hideo described the gesture as a demonstration of the strong friendship between both nations, expressing hope that it would inspire more young Nigerians to embrace badminton.

Badminton Federation of Nigeria President Francis Orbih welcomed the support, noting that access to quality equipment remains one of the biggest challenges facing the sport.

He revealed that another shipment containing 500 rackets, 100 nets and 200 shuttlecocks has already been secured to further improve training opportunities across the country.

Orbih also disclosed plans to register badminton academies nationwide and establish a National Badminton League aimed at creating a stronger pathway for young talent.

National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko praised the partnership, stating that improved access to modern equipment will enhance athlete development and increase Nigeria's competitiveness at international tournaments while deepening sporting ties between both countries.
