FG Seals Deal to Host 2027 African School Games in Abuja

Nigeria has taken a major step towards hosting the 2027 African School Games after the Federal Government signed the official hosting agreement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Abuja, confirming the Nigerian capital as the host city for the second edition of the continental sporting event.

The Games are expected to bring together young athletes from across Africa to compete in various sports while promoting unity and youth development.

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, described the event as an important achievement for the country, noting that it reflects the government's commitment to strengthening grassroots sports.

According to him, school sports remain the foundation for discovering and developing future champions, making the African School Games an ideal platform for nurturing young talent.

Dikko also expressed confidence that Nigeria would successfully organise the tournament, promising facilities and standards that would leave a lasting impression on participating nations.

Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said preparations were already gathering momentum, adding that the organising committee had assembled experienced professionals to ensure the competition meets international expectations.

He stressed that the Games would provide young athletes with opportunities to showcase their abilities on a continental stage.

ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf commended the Nigerian government for accepting the responsibility of hosting the event.

He expressed confidence in the country's ability to deliver a memorable tournament while highlighting the importance of investing in Africa's next generation of athletes.

The ceremony also featured awards recognising the contributions of sports administrators involved in developing athletics across the continent, while officials unveiled the Games' logo and mascot as excitement continues to build ahead of Abuja 2027.
