Switzerland Beat Colombia on Penalties to Reach World Cup Quarter-finals

Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after edging Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless 120 minutes in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday.

Neither side managed to find a breakthrough during regulation time or extra time despite creating several opportunities in a fiercely contested encounter.

Switzerland controlled slightly more possession with 54 percent and completed 546 passes at an impressive 87 percent accuracy, while Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack and forced the Swiss defence to stay alert throughout the match.

The closest either team came to scoring was in the 99th minute when Colombia defender Jhon Lucumí struck the post, leaving the Swiss relieved as the match headed toward penalties.

In the shootout, Switzerland held their nerve with captain Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Manuel Akanji, Cedric Itten and Rubén Vargas all converting their spot-kicks.

Colombia responded through Juan Fernando Quintero, Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Arias' replacement Jhon Campaz, but Luis Díaz failed to convert the decisive penalty, handing Switzerland a 4-3 victory.

The match was also filled with physical battles, producing five yellow cards. Switzerland's Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim were cautioned, while Colombia's Luis Suárez and Davinson Sánchez also entered the referee's notebook.

Both managers made several substitutions in an attempt to find a winner, introducing fresh attacking options during the second half and extra time, but neither defence could be broken.

The hard-fought victory keeps Switzerland's World Cup dream alive as they advance to the last eight, while Colombia bow out after producing a spirited display that pushed their European opponents to the limit.
