CAF Opens Bidding for 2028, 2032 and 2036 AFCON Tournaments
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has commenced the bidding process for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), giving its 54 Member Associations the opportunity to compete for the hosting rights of the continent's biggest football tournament.
CAF announced the development in a statement released on Saturday, confirming that eligible member associations can now begin submitting their proposals to stage any of the three future championships.
According to the governing body, the selection process has been designed to ensure fairness, transparency and competitiveness.
CAF stated that all bids will be assessed using clearly defined technical, financial and operational requirements to identify countries capable of successfully hosting the prestigious tournament.
The organisation disclosed that the bidding framework was developed with input from independent advisers, including professional services firm PwC, alongside technical, financial and legal consultants to strengthen the integrity of the process.
The announcement comes as attention gradually shifts towards the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The competition will mark the first time three East African countries co-host the tournament.
In recent years, AFCON has continued to grow in popularity, attracting huge global television audiences and significant engagement across digital platforms.
The competition remains the flagship event in African football and serves as an important platform for showcasing the continent's football talent.
Countries eventually selected to host the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions will also have the opportunity to promote their infrastructure, tourism industry and organisational capabilities while welcoming teams and supporters from across Africa and beyond.
