D'Tigers Edge Guinea to Reach FIBA World Cup Qualifiers Second Round
Nigeria's D'Tigers booked their place in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African qualifiers after edging Guinea 80-79 in a thrilling Group C encounter played on Friday in Luanda, Angola.
The Nigerian side displayed resilience to secure the narrow victory, extending their impressive run in the competition. The win came just a day after D'Tigers defeated Tunisia 84-81 in another closely contested game, underlining their determination to qualify for the next phase.
Guinea appeared to be in control for much of the contest and entered the final quarter with a six-point advantage.
However, D'Tigers produced a spirited comeback in the closing minutes, overturning the deficit before sealing victory by the slimmest of margins.
The result not only ended Guinea's unbeaten run in the group but also ensured that both teams progressed to the second round of the qualifiers.
Nigeria will now shift attention to their final Group C fixture against Rwanda, scheduled for Sunday, where they will hope to finish the opening phase on a winning note.
Following the conclusion of the first round, the 12 qualified teams will be split into two groups of six. Results earned against fellow qualifiers during the opening stage will be carried forward into the next round, making every victory crucial.
At the end of the second round, the top two teams from each group, along with the best third-placed side, will qualify to represent Africa at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will be hosted by Qatar.
D'Tigers will be aiming to maintain their momentum as they continue their quest for a place at the global tournament.
