USA Defeat Bosnia to Reach World Cup Round of 16 Despite Balogun Red Card
The United States secured a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after recording a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in front of their home supporters.
Mauricio Pochettino's side produced a disciplined performance to overcome a difficult challenge, despite playing the closing stages of the match with 10 men following Folarin Balogun's dismissal.
The hosts took the lead just before halftime through Balogun, who finished off a well-worked attacking move to give the Americans a deserved advantage heading into the break.
His goal capped a lively first-half display in which the United States created the better opportunities.
The match took a dramatic turn in the second half when Balogun was sent off after the Video Assistant Referee reviewed an incident involving the striker.
Reduced to 10 players, the Americans were forced to defend deeper as Bosnia increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.
Bosnia and Herzegovina created several promising chances but were repeatedly denied by a well-organised American defence and goalkeeper Matt Freese, who made a number of important saves to preserve his side's lead.
The United States eventually sealed victory in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman produced a superb free-kick that flew into the top corner, putting the result beyond doubt and sending the home fans into celebration.
The victory marked the United States' first knockout-stage win at a FIFA World Cup since 2002 and earned them a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Although Balogun will miss the next match because of suspension, the Americans will take confidence from a resilient display that demonstrated their defensive strength and determination to progress further in the tournament.
