Chelsea Explain Enzo Maresca’s Exit Following Manchester City Interest
Chelsea have issued a detailed statement explaining the circumstances surrounding Enzo Maresca's departure, claiming the Italian made it clear he wanted to become Pep Guardiola's successor at Manchester City.
According to the Premier League club, Maresca informed Chelsea during the early part of the 2025/26 season that an opportunity could arise for him to take charge at the Etihad once Guardiola stepped down. The Blues said the revelation created uncertainty and eventually affected the stability of the team.
Chelsea stated that Maresca resigned from his role in December 2025, despite being under a long-term contract.
The club believes his desire to manage Manchester City had become stronger than his commitment to the project at Stamford Bridge.
The London club admitted that changing managers in the middle of a season was far from ideal but insisted it had little choice after Maresca decided not to continue in the role.
In the statement, Chelsea described the campaign as disappointing and suggested that the managerial disruption played a major role in the team's struggles throughout the season.
The Blues also confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Manchester City regarding compensation linked to Maresca's appointment.
They added that a separate confidential settlement was agreed with the Italian coach over the termination of his contract.
Manchester City officially unveiled Maresca as their new manager on Monday following Guardiola's departure.
The Italian has signed a long-term deal and is expected to begin preparations for the new campaign as he attempts to build on City's recent domestic and European success.
