South Korea President Orders Probe Into World Cup 2026 Exit
South Korea’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked a strong reaction from President Lee Jae-myung, who has ordered a formal investigation into the national team’s early elimination from the tournament.
Despite entering the competition with high expectations after an impressive unbeaten qualification campaign, the Taeguk Warriors failed to progress beyond the group stage.
They managed just one victory while suffering two defeats, finishing behind Mexico and South Africa in their group.
The poor outing has drawn widespread criticism from supporters and football stakeholders across the country.
President Lee expressed frustration over the outcome, insisting that those responsible for key decisions within the football setup must be held accountable.
In a statement shared on his X account, Lee argued that leadership and personnel choices played a major role in the team’s failure.
He stressed that competence should always come before personal interests when appointing individuals to positions of responsibility.
The president also directed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding South Korea’s World Cup campaign.
According to him, the review should identify the causes of the failure and recommend reforms to prevent a repeat in future tournaments.
South Korea were considered one of Asia’s strongest representatives at the World Cup, with captain Son Heung-min expected to inspire another deep run.
However, the nation has now suffered another group-stage exit, continuing a worrying trend that has seen them struggle to make a significant impact at the tournament in recent years.
