Japan Can Make Something Happen Against Brazil – Minamino

Japan forward Takumi Minamino has expressed confidence that the Samurai Blue can produce one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they face Brazil in the Round of 32.

The former Liverpool attacker believes Japan's chances of upsetting the South American giants will depend on maintaining the fearless mentality that has helped the team compete against some of the world's strongest nations.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated knockout clash in Houston, Minamino said Japan have nothing to lose against a side widely regarded as one of the tournament favourites.

He insisted that embracing the role of underdogs allows the players to perform with greater freedom and belief, adding that one-off knockout matches often create opportunities for unexpected results.

"If we play with the underdog mentality, as we always have, I believe we have the ability to make something happen in these one-off games," Minamino said.

The 31-year-old also provided an encouraging update on teammate Takefusa Kubo, who has been recovering from a knee injury.

According to Minamino, the Real Sociedad star remains determined to return to action and has continued working hard during rehabilitation.

He revealed that everyone within the Japanese camp is optimistic Kubo will be available during the knockout rounds.

Japan booked their place in the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group F. The Samurai Blue opened their campaign with an emphatic victory over Tunisia before earning hard-fought draws against the Netherlands and Sweden to secure qualification.

Brazil head into the encounter as favourites, but Japan will take confidence from previous performances against elite opposition and will hope to deliver another memorable World Cup upset.

A disciplined defensive display, quick counterattacks and collective teamwork could prove crucial if they are to overcome the five-time world champions and advance to the next stage of the competition.
