Almirón Makes World Cup History After First-Ever “Mouth Cover” Red Card

Miguel Almirón has made unwanted history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after becoming the first player to be shown a red card under the tournament’s new disciplinary rule regarding mouth-covering incidents during confrontational situations.

The match between Paraguay national football team and Turkey national football team took a dramatic turn in the first half when Almirón was dismissed following a VAR review.

The incident occurred after Almirón covered his mouth while speaking directly to Turkey defender Mert Müldür, an action that was interpreted by match officials as a breach of FIFA’s updated regulations for the 2026 tournament.

According to the new rules introduced for the World Cup staged across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, players are not allowed to cover their mouths when communicating in confrontational exchanges with opponents, as it is seen as potentially unsporting or concealing intent.

Although Paraguay had taken an early lead through Matías Galarza, the red card left them with ten men for most of the match, forcing them into a more defensive approach for the remainder of the game.

Despite the setback, the South American side managed to hold on for a crucial victory that boosts their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage.

Turkey, however, suffered further disappointment as the defeat confirmed their elimination from the tournament after back-to-back losses in the group stage.

Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro avoided direct criticism of the decision but suggested frustration with the overall circumstances surrounding the game.

Attention now shifts to their final group fixture, which will determine their fate in the competition.
