Mexico Beat South Korea to Become First Team Into World Cup Last 32

Mexico secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara, becoming the first team to qualify for the last 32.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 50th minute when midfielder Luis Romo reacted quickest inside the box to tap the ball into an empty net.

The goal followed a mistake from South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who spilled the ball after a collision with his own defender, allowing Mexico to capitalise on the error.

Before the breakthrough, both sides struggled to create clear chances in a tightly contested first half. Mexico, however, came out stronger after the break, driven by a lively home crowd that had earlier expressed frustration with the team’s slow start.

South Korea also had opportunities to level the score, with captain Son Heung-min coming close when he chipped the goalkeeper, but his effort was ruled out for offside after being cleared off the line by Mexico’s defence.

Later in the game, Cho Gue-sung nearly equalised with a close-range header, but Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a strong save to keep his side ahead.

As the match progressed, Mexico continued to threaten on the counterattack. Substitute Obed Vargas tested the South Korean keeper with a powerful late strike, while striker Raúl Jiménez also went close from a tight angle.

The result ensures Mexico maintain a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and top Group A, guaranteeing progression as group winners. Their strong performance also means they will play their next knockout match in Mexico City, with the possibility of facing England if results align in later rounds.

Despite the defeat, South Korea still remain in contention for qualification, having already picked up an opening win earlier in the tournament. They will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixture against South Africa as they aim to secure a place in the next round.

Mexico will conclude their group stage campaign against Czech Republic, confident and in strong form as they continue their push in the competition.
