FIFA Hands South Africa’s Zwane Three-Match Ban After Mexico Red Card

South Africa’s World Cup 2026 campaign has suffered an early setback after FIFA confirmed a three-match suspension for midfielder Themba Zwane following his red card in their opening group game against Mexico.

Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute of Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat after a VAR review showed he had raised his arm in an off-the-ball challenge involving Roberto Alvarado.

What initially looked like a standard dismissal was later upgraded in severity, with FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee classifying the incident as serious foul play.

As a result, the midfielder will now miss three matches instead of the automatic one-game ban normally handed out for a straight red card.

FIFA explained that an additional two-game extension was added due to the nature of the offence, although the decision remains open to appeal.

The ruling has sparked frustration within the South African camp, especially from head coach Hugo Broos, who questioned the consistency of officiating in the match.

While he accepted the first red card shown to Sphephelo Sithole, he suggested Zwane’s sending-off was overly harsh and influenced by interpretation rather than clear intent.

The match itself was already difficult for Bafana Bafana, who ended the game with nine men after another dismissal earlier in the second half. Mexico also had a player sent off late in the match, but the damage had already been done.

South Africa will now attempt to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next Group A fixture against the Czech Republic in Atlanta.

Their opponents also come into the game under pressure after a narrow 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their opening match, making the upcoming encounter crucial for both sides.
