Partey Ruled Out of Ghana World Cup Opener After Failed Travel Ban Appeal
Ghana have suffered a major setback ahead of their 2026 World Cup opener after Thomas Partey was ruled out of the clash against Panama following a failed appeal against a travel ban.
The experienced midfielder, aged 33, was initially denied entry into Canada by immigration authorities, preventing him from joining the squad in Toronto for the Group stage fixture scheduled for June 18.
Despite efforts from the Ghana Football Association to overturn the decision, the appeal was rejected by a Canadian federal court.
Partey’s situation is linked to ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, which influenced the visa refusal.
Although Ghana officials argued that he had previously been allowed to join the team’s camp in the United States, the court upheld the travel restriction.
The ruling was confirmed shortly after Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz admitted uncertainty over the player’s availability during a pre-match briefing. He stressed the importance of having a full squad but avoided directly addressing Partey’s case.
Partey, who was included in Ghana’s World Cup squad, is currently facing multiple serious charges in the UK, which continue to affect his international movement. He has denied all allegations and is expected to face further legal proceedings later in the year.
His absence is a significant blow for Ghana, who were hoping to rely on his experience and leadership in midfield as they begin their World Cup campaign.
The team will now have to adjust their plans quickly as they prepare to face Panama without one of their key players.
