Japan Strike Late to Rescue 2-2 Draw Against Netherlands

Japan produced a dramatic late comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F clash at Dallas Stadium.

The Dutch side appeared on course for victory after a strong second-half performance, with Virgil van Dijk opening the scoring early in the second period before Crysencio Summerville added a second to put them in control.

Their lead, however, did not last as Japan continued to show resilience and belief throughout the match.

Japan pulled one back through Keito Nakamura, whose low strike brought them back into the contest and shifted momentum.

The Samurai Blue, who have built a reputation for late fightbacks in major tournaments, pushed forward with increasing intensity as the game wore on.

Their persistence was rewarded in the closing stages when substitute Koki Ogawa’s header created chaos inside the box, allowing Daichi Kamada to divert the ball home in the 89th minute and complete the comeback.

The Netherlands had chances to extend their lead earlier, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making key saves to keep Japan in the game.

Despite controlling large portions of the match, the Dutch were left frustrated after conceding from a set-piece in the final moments.

Both teams now leave with a point apiece, reflecting a match that swung back and forth and showcased the competitive nature of the group.

Japan will take confidence from their fighting spirit, while the Netherlands will rue missed opportunities to secure all three points.
