Courtois Opens Up on Relationship With Mourinho Ahead of Real Madrid Reunion

Thibaut Courtois has expressed confidence and excitement ahead of working again with José Mourinho at Real Madrid, insisting their relationship has always remained strong despite past disagreements.

The Belgian goalkeeper admitted that his time with Mourinho at Chelsea was not without tension, but he described those moments as normal in football and part of a manager’s demanding approach.

Courtois explained that Mourinho’s direct class helped push him to improve. He recalled how being benched after a mistake served as motivation, and he responded strongly in the following games with standout performances.

According to the 34-year-old shot-stopper, both he and Mourinho share a similar personality type, which is why their working relationship has remained respectful and straightforward over the years.

He praised the Portuguese coach for always speaking openly and not hiding his opinions from players.

Courtois also highlighted that honesty has been a key factor in their understanding, saying it has helped avoid long-term issues between them despite occasional disagreements.

Their partnership first began during Mourinho’s spell at Chelsea in the 2014–2015 season, shortly after Courtois returned from his loan at Atlético Madrid.

Together, they enjoyed a successful campaign, winning the Premier League title and the League Cup.

Now reunited at Real Madrid, Courtois believes the mutual respect they share will once again be important as they aim for more success at the Spanish club.
