Nigeria holds 26th spot in new FIFA rankings despite mixed results

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained their 26th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings released on Thursday by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The ranking shows that Nigeria’s position remains unchanged despite a busy international schedule in recent weeks.

The team, coached by Éric Chelle, took part in the Unity Cup invitational tournament held in London, where they delivered impressive performances.

During the competition, the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe before going on to defeat Jamaica 3-0, further strengthening their standing on the continental stage. These results helped maintain their consistency in global football rankings.

In addition to their Unity Cup success, Nigeria also featured in two international friendly matches during the period under review.

The team played out a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw and later suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Leiria. Despite the mixed outcomes, the performances were considered competitive against strong European opposition.

On the African continent, Nigeria continues to sit in third place, behind Morocco’s Atlas Lions and Senegal’s Teranga Lions.

Algeria and Egypt complete the top five teams in Africa, reflecting the competitive nature of African football at the highest level.

At the global level, the top five positions remain unchanged. World champions Argentina continue to lead the rankings, followed by Spain, France, England, and Portugal in that order.

FIFA has announced that the next update to the world rankings will be published on Monday, July 20.
