Stephen Keshi to Be Inducted Into NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame
Late Nigerian football legend Stephen Keshi is set to receive another major honour as the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) prepares to induct him into its Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame.
The announcement was made in Lagos during a memorial lecture organised in remembrance of the former Super Eagles captain and coach.
Former national team captain Segun Odegbami disclosed that Keshi had been selected following a review of his outstanding achievements and impact on Nigerian football.
The NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame recognises individuals who have used sports to promote Nigeria’s image and strengthen the country’s international reputation.
Keshi’s induction ceremony is scheduled for July 28, just ahead of the 10th anniversary of his burial.
Odegbami said Keshi’s accomplishments as both a player and coach made him a deserving recipient of the honour.
According to him, the football icon not only achieved success on the pitch but also helped many African footballers secure professional opportunities abroad.
Keshi remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football figures. As captain, he led the Super Eagles to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations. Years later, he repeated the feat from the dugout, guiding Nigeria to continental glory at the 2013 AFCON.
His coaching achievements extended beyond Nigeria. Keshi famously led Togo to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, a landmark moment in the country’s football history. He also took Nigeria to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, further cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s finest coaches.
The former defender passed away on June 7, 2016, at the age of 54. Despite his death, his influence on Nigerian and African football continues to be recognised.
The latest honour from the NIIA serves as another reminder of his lasting legacy and the important role he played in promoting Nigeria through sports on the global stage.
