Super Eagles Defender Igoh Ogbu Set for Long Injury Layoff

Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has been ruled out for a lengthy period after suffering a serious injury during national team training in Lisbon.

The 26-year-old centre-back sustained an Achilles tendon rupture on Saturday while training with the Super Eagles, a setback that is expected to keep him out of action for several months.

Super Eagles media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed the development on Sunday, noting that the player will undergo further medical scans to determine the full extent of the injury and guide his recovery process.

Early reports from SCORENigeria indicate that Ogbu could be sidelined for as long as nine months, a major blow for both club and country.

The injury comes at a difficult time for the defender, who had recently been involved in key national team assignments.

Ogbu featured in the invitational Unity Cup held in London and also played in the international friendly against Poland, which ended in a 2-2 draw. His performances in recent matches had strengthened his position within the Super Eagles setup.

He was also part of the squad that competed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he contributed to Nigeria’s defensive efforts.

The latest injury is expected to rule him out of upcoming Super Eagles fixtures, including high-profile international friendlies, while his club side will also have to cope without his services for a significant period.

Medical updates are expected in the coming days as the player begins rehabilitation planning.
