Nigeria’s Igoh Ogbu Out of Portugal Friendly With Suspected Achilles Injury

Super Eagles defender, Igoh Ogbu, has been ruled out of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal after picking up an injury during training on Saturday evening.

The centre-back reportedly suffered the setback during a training session as the team stepped up preparations for the high-profile encounter against the European side.

According to the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, medical checks suggest the player may have sustained a suspected rupture of his left Achilles tendon, a serious injury that could keep him out for an extended period.

A statement from the team’s medical department confirmed the situation, noting that Ogbu will not be available for selection in the Portugal clash as further assessments are carried out to determine the severity of the injury.

“Super Eagles defender, Igoh Ogbu has been ruled out of the friendly against Portugal after sustaining an injury in training this evening,” the statement read.

It added that team doctors suspect a rupture of the left Achilles tendon, with more tests expected in the coming days.

The development is a major blow to the Super Eagles’ defensive setup, especially as Ogbu has been part of the squad’s recent preparations and was in contention to feature in the friendly.

The defender will now focus on recovery as the national team continues its build-up to upcoming international assignments without him.

Nigeria’s coaching crew is expected to adjust their defensive options ahead of the clash, as they look to maintain balance in the squad despite the setback.
