Abakaliki FC to go on long break after cup elimination
Abakaliki FC have confirmed an extended break for their players and technical crew following the conclusion of their campaign in the President Federation Cup.
The club announced a 55-day off-season period as part of plans to allow the team to rest, recover, and reset ahead of preparations for the 2026–27 football season.
According to the management, the break will officially run until July 25, 2026, when players and staff are expected to return to training.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the club chairman, Senator Obinna Ogba, who noted that the period will also be used to evaluate the team’s performance during the just-concluded season.
He explained that the club will carefully review areas where improvements are needed, especially after an inconsistent campaign that saw Abakaliki FC exit the Federation Cup at the Round of 32 stage following a defeat to Barau FC in Abuja.
Ogba added that the review process will help management address identified weaknesses and strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. He also assured fans that updates regarding player retention and possible changes to the squad will be communicated in due time.
Abakaliki FC, popularly known as the Rice Boys, ended their league campaign in fifth position on the Conference B table with a total of 25 points. While the finish reflected some level of stability, the club believes there is still room for improvement to compete more strongly in upcoming competitions.
The management expressed appreciation to supporters for their continued backing throughout the season and encouraged them to remain patient as the team undergoes restructuring.
With preparations already being mapped out for the next season, the club is expected to focus on rebuilding and strengthening key areas during the break period to ensure better results going forward.
