FIFA Revises World Cup Water Bottle Ban After Backlash

FIFA has revised its stadium entry policy for the 2026 World Cup after facing widespread criticism over its earlier ban on water bottles.

The governing body now says fans will be allowed to bring one sealed soft plastic bottle into match venues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The decision comes just days after FIFA announced a stricter rule that prohibited all outside bottles, including refillable ones.

The move sparked backlash from supporters, health experts, and environmental advocates who warned that it could endanger fans, especially with several matches expected to take place in extreme heat conditions.

In its updated clarification, FIFA explained that the policy is designed to balance safety and hydration needs. Officials said hard containers remain banned due to security concerns, but soft plastic bottles are considered safe for entry.

Stadiums will also provide water stations, cooling areas, and misting zones to help fans cope with high temperatures.

The change follows growing concerns about heat stress during the tournament, with climate reports predicting dangerous conditions at multiple venues.

Critics had argued that restricting water access was unrealistic and potentially harmful given the weather forecasts.

FIFA also confirmed that bottled water will still be sold inside stadiums at regulated prices.

While some fans welcomed the adjustment, others believe the rule still needs improvement, especially regarding environmental impact and affordability.

Despite the criticism, FIFA maintains that fan safety remains the top priority as preparations continue for the expanded 2026 tournament.
