Nigerian Midfielder Onuche Ogbelu Joins Libyan Giants Al-Ittihad SC
Libyan football giants Al-Ittihad SC have officially secured the signature of Nigerian midfielder Onuche Ogbelu, in a move that strengthens their squad ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old midfielder joins the Tripoli-based side on a three-year deal after leaving Tunisian champions Espérance, where he spent the last few seasons developing his game at a high competitive level.
Ogbelu originally moved to Espérance in 2023 from Nigeria Premier Football League side Nasarawa United, following an impressive rise in domestic football.
His performances quickly earned him recognition beyond Nigeria, eventually leading to his move to North Africa.
During his time with Espérance, the former Flying Eagles star made notable contributions, including appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where he impressed with his calmness in midfield and ability to control possession under pressure.
Known for his strong tactical awareness, precise passing, and ability to resist opposition pressing, Ogbelu became a reliable figure in the Tunisian club’s midfield setup. He made over 50 league appearances and also contributed goals during his spell.
Al-Ittihad have been active in the transfer market this summer, with Ogbelu becoming their fifth signing. The club has also brought in several experienced players as they aim to strengthen their squad for domestic and continental competitions.
On the international stage, Ogbelu has already built a solid reputation. He was a key member of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles squad that finished third at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, featuring in all of Nigeria’s matches during the tournament.
His performances also earned him a training invitation with the Super Eagles in 2023, highlighting his growing profile in Nigerian football.
The move to Libya is seen as another important step in Ogbelu’s career as he continues to develop in North African football.
