Messi Honoured With Prestigious Princess Of Asturias Sports Prize

Lionel Messi has been named the winner of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, an honour that recognises outstanding achievement and global influence in athletics.

The announcement was made by the awarding committee under the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which highlighted Messi’s long-standing excellence, consistency, and impact on world football as key reasons for his selection.

The Argentine forward, born in Rosario in 1987, began his football journey at Newell’s Old Boys before moving to Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy as a teenager. He made his senior debut in 2004 and went on to build one of the most decorated careers in football history.

During his time at Barcelona, Messi won numerous domestic and international titles, establishing himself as the club’s all-time great.

His achievements include multiple league crowns and UEFA Champions League triumphs, alongside several other major honours.

After leaving Spain, he had a spell at Paris Saint-Germain before continuing his career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, where he remains active.

On the international stage, Messi led Argentina to major success, including the FIFA World Cup title in 2022 and Copa América victories, cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest figures.

The Foundation also praised his individual accolades, including multiple Ballon d’Or awards and global scoring records, as well as his influence beyond football through charity work and ambassadorial roles.

This latest recognition adds to a career already filled with historic achievements and reinforces Messi’s standing as one of the most influential athletes in modern sports history.
