“We Are Still Champions” – Gueye Slams CAF, Ready To Hand AFCON Gold To Morocco

Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF), accusing the body of creating division across the continent following its controversial decision to award Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

CAF’s ruling effectively stripped Senegal of their crown, handing the title to Morocco in a move that has sparked widespread reactions within the football community. Gueye, however, insists that the decision does not change his team’s belief in their achievement.

Speaking after Everton FC’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Chelsea FC, the experienced midfielder expressed disappointment over CAF’s actions. He described the decision as unnecessary and divisive, suggesting it could create tension between African nations.

Gueye maintained that Senegal still considers itself the rightful champion, regardless of CAF’s verdict. According to him, the announcement appears to be a distraction rather than a fair sporting decision.

In a surprising gesture, the former Paris Saint-Germain star revealed he would be willing to personally return the AFCON gold medals to Morocco if it would help ease tensions between the two countries. He added that, in his opinion, the Senegalese Football Federation should not have pursued an appeal.

Despite his stance, the federation has already escalated the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, signaling that the dispute is far from over.

The controversy continues to generate debate across African football, with many stakeholders questioning CAF’s decision-making process. Gueye’s comments further highlight the growing dissatisfaction among players and officials, as the situation threatens to deepen divisions within the continent’s football landscape.
